About

Dunbar Church of the Nazarene is an evangelical Christian church rooted in the Methodist tradition. Our mission as a congregation is to be the heart, hands and feet of Christ in our community and around the world. In our community, we reach inward and outward with the glorious message of the Gospel through worship, discipleship and community ministries. By being “connected” with the Church of the Nazarene, we are able to be a part of God’s Kingdom work throughout southern West Virginia and the rest of the world. This is accomplished by networking with other churches in our state to help support Christian missions in 156 world areas, ranging from the plains of Africa to the sands of the Middle East to the urban cities of the United States.

Below is a short history of our congregation and we would like to invite you to be our guest this Sunday @ 10:45 a.m.!

In 1930, during the straights of the Great Depression, a group of earnest believers under the leadership of Rev. Earl Hissom organized to form the Dunbar 1st Church of the Nazarene. This little band of vibrant believers was able to build a modest wooden frame church, known as the “Glory Barn,” that served as their place of Worship during the years of the depression.

As the church grew and the world was at war, the congregation began to build our current building on the corner of 16th & Lightner, first building a basement sanctuary, and then in the early 50’s, adding the current sanctuary atop this basement. Tragedy struck in 1955, when the church was destroyed by fire.

Over the last half of a century since that fateful night, our congregation has seen God’s providential hand at work. From rebuilding to adding education and gym space to ministering to hundreds of families, Christ’s message has continued to be shared in the Dunbar community through the faithfulness of both the congregation and its pastors.
